Rachel's

A Favorite New York Hideaway

Sometimes it may seem difficult to find place that is well kept secret in New York City, but my favorite is still thriving. It's a wonderful European Bistro called Rachel's at 43rd St and 9th Ave. Though it is relatively near the theater district it is tucked away far enough west that only New Yorkers know about it.

As you come in from 9th Ave, you enter a tiny foyer that leads into the front of the long thin eatery with the bar in front. You get a sense of the age of the building by all the old wood at the bar and doorways and the slightly crooked wooden floors. The feeling is that of a cozy little place you would see in Paris that only neighborhood people would know about.

The very friendly and attentive wait staff seated my manager Chris and me at one of the white linened tables with wooden chairs. We then started with bottle of Shiraz from their extensive wine list.

For appetizers we had the Grilled Portobello Salad with Arugala and a favorite of mine, the Warm Spinach Salad with Chicken Livers and Wild Mushrooms. They were both wonderful and the portions were quite ample.

We then went to our entrees. I had the Veal Scallopine with Madeira Wine, Spinach and Cream. This was so tender and beautifully flavored with the Madeira. And Chris ordered the Sautéed Breast of Duck in Cassis Sauce. This also was fabulous, not heavy and not overly sweet.

For dessert our server made a few lavish offerings and Chris went with a simple chocolate cake. When it arrived it was hardly simple. Very rich… a meal in itself for some people. Certainly not for me. We polished off the meal with some Remy and coffee. It was a happy way for Chris to spend his first night in New York. He said he felt like a native. I think he meant an native New Yorker. Perhaps he meant he felt like a savage of some sort. You never know with him!
