The night we ate at Opera, most of us toasted Spider with Veuve Cliquot champagne. One of us at the table, however, is not much of a drinker. The Opera bartender made her a Lychee Martini, which we have later learned from no less unimpeachable a source than Entertainment Weekly (in the issue with Britney Spears on the cover, so you know its cultural bona fides are in order) is the hot drink of the moment. So drop your Cosmopolitans and pick up one of these. The version presented below is not quite the version that Opera served, which in turn is not quite the version that trendy watering holes on the coasts are serving. But, hey, it works for us.
 | 1½ oz. of juice from a can of lychees
|
 | 3 oz vodka
|
 | 1 oz light rum
|
 | 1 canned lychee
|
Shake the first three ingredients with ice in a martini shaker and strain into a well-chilled martini glass. Garnish with the lychee and serve.
