Glogg

Most people pronounce the name of this drink as if it were spelled GLUG. Show them that you're in the know by pronouncing it as the Norwegians do: GLEWG. This isn't a traditional recipe, but it's good, and it makes a great holiday party punch.

2 bottles of merlot

½ cup sugar

2 cups water

2 cinnamon sticks

4 whole cloves

2 tsp cardamom

2 oranges

1 lemon

1 cup brandy

Grate the rind from the lemon and the oranges and combine it with the sugar, the water and the spices. Bring to a boil and boil for three minutes. Set aside to cool.

Squeeze the citrus fruits and combine the juice with the spiced syrup you've just made.

Combine this mixture with the wine, cover tightly, and keep in the refrigerator for at least three days.

Before serving, strain the glogg into a sauce pan and heat it almost to boiling, adding the brandy just at the end.

Serve hot in mugs.
